BCA Playwright Residency

Applications are now closed for the 2024–2025 Season.

Program Overview

The BCA Playwright Residency supports rising playwrights by providing space to write, rehearse, and workshop a new work. Support is tailored to the selected artist, including mentorship, professional development to create, produce and reach expanded audiences, as well as further their creative process. This program aims to provide a container for playwrights who are invested in developing experimental work that sheds light on underrepresented stories and narratives. The playwright must create a new work while in the program.

As part of the program, the awarded playwrights will have access to free space for a mid-year workshop, as well as a final staged reading. The playwrights will have access to a studio space located in the BCA Artist Studios Building, located at 551 Tremont St. The studio space will be shared between both playwrights, and it is already equipped with desks, chairs and power. The playwrights will also be able to work with up to 5 collaborators for the mid-year workshop and final stage reading.

Artistic Ethos:

Our goal is to gather a diverse and inclusive community of artists for the purpose of supporting innovative work across disciplines, connecting artists with peers and resources, and providing a vibrant platform for new art in Boston.

Applications will be evaluated based on artist’s demonstration of:

  • Experimentation. Does the artist’s practice display innovation, openness to new ideas, perspectives, and techniques?
  • Responsiveness. Is the artist’s work relevant, topical, in dialogue with issues of contemporary interest?
  • Community Engagement. Does the artist demonstrate a willingness and aptitude for significant give and take exchange among colleagues and audiences?
  • Potential Impact. How does the artist articulate the impact of this residency on their practice?

We are looking for playwrights who:

  • Are committed to incubating a new work
  • Have written a complete work (short or full length play)
  • Playwrights who are interested in the access to free studio and workshop space
  • Interested in presenting their work at a final staged reading at the end of the residency
  • Playwrights local to Boston and surrounding areas
