Visual Arts Residency

Please note: Applications for the 2020-2021 Visual Arts Residency are now closed.

Our Visual Arts Residency supports two artists or artist collectives per season in experimenting with their craft and developing their focus or testing new ideas, while also engaging in vital public dialogue. This residency is also open to applicants whose work takes a broad range of forms, such as dance and movement-based practices, theatre and writing-based practices, and artists engaged in installation, sound, or other innovative media.

Resources for the Visual Arts Residency includes access to studio space, and additional professional and creative support.

We look for proposals that puts special emphasis on supporting projects that involve direct engagement with the community – whether through collaborative activities, participatory public installations, performance, intervention or other imaginative activation. We seek proposed projects that have public interaction and participation as significant elements.

Selection Criteria:

Visual Artist Residents will be selected based on:

  • Strength of artistic practice (rate quality of applicant’s work, based on factors including originality, consistency, cohesiveness, serious commitment, and potential for continued artistic growth in work being created)
  • Potential impact of residency on artist’s practice (based on artist’s career trajectory and proposed project ideas, rate whether this residency comes at a time that will have a particularly significant effect on the applicant’s development as an artist)
  • Artist’s contribution to Equity/Diversity/Inclusion in Boston’s art community (based on information provided by applicant, does applicant represent a perspective that is underrepresented in Boston’s current arts community?)
