Shared as a work-in-process through the new Dancemakers Laboratory at BCA, OtherWise is a multidisciplinary performance production investigating intergenerational trauma through the lens of the Soviet-era bard movement.
Drawing upon and interpreting the songs of iconic bards such as Bulat Okudzhava, Vladimir Vysotsky, Alexander Galich, and Yuri Vizbor, OtherWise fuses dance, music, and spoken word to illuminate a unique refugee experience.

About Ilya Vidrin
Ilya Vidrin is a choreographer, dramaturg, and research-practitioner situated at the nexus of performing arts, ethics, and interactive media. Born into a refugee family, Ilya grew up navigating the nuances of cultural expectations, language barriers, and diverging political ideologies. This experience of code-switching fuels his research and artistic practice to interrogate ethical dimensions of human interaction, including the embodiment of empathy, cultural competence, and social responsibility.
In recent years, Ilya has been artist-in-residence at Ballet Des Moines, North Atlantic Ballet, Jacob’s Pillow, AREA Gallery, the National Parks Service, Harvard ArtLab, The Walnut Hill School, Interlochen Arts Academy, MIT Media Lab, Windhover Center for Performing Arts, Museum of Fine Arts (Boston), and the New Museum (NYC).
Alongside his artistic practice, Ilya pursued undergraduate studies in Cognitive Neuroscience at Northeastern University, a Master’s in Human Development at Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in Performing Arts at the Centre for Dance Research (United Kingdom).

DANCEMAKERS RESEARCH LABORATORY at BCA
Dancemakers Research Laboratory at BCA supports a handful of dance-based artists to continue to explore and develop existing work through the lens of process extending beyond the initial premiere of a work. Through a series of open rehearsals, the artists create a feedback loop with mentors and those impacted or involved in the addressed topic.
The 2021-2022 pilot season will feature work from Rachel Linsky, Jenny Oliver, and Ilya Vidrin. Throughout their time on BCA’s campus, each dancemaker will invite guests and colleagues to share feedback on their work through a series of closed and open rehearsals.
