Movement Workshop with Melissa Alexis

Melissa Alexis, a BCA Dance Lab Resident, invites you to a movement workshop exploring topics of healing and evolution that will inform her newest work The Promised Land.

Free and Open to participants ages 12+. No dance background necessary! A new dance piece, The Promised Land by Melissa Alexis is in development at Boston Center for the Arts this year. Throughout the summer, Melissa and three additional dancers have been rehearsing outdoors in the elements and improvising processes that inform the piece.

Now, we have the fortune of bringing to the studio with us some of Melissa’s central research questions and focal points:

  • How do we honor the struggle of our ancestors while healing past wounds to move forward in the light?
  • What does it sound and feel like to move from war to harmony?
  • What reconfiguration of (our) nature has to happen for us to co-create a new world that we want to live in and pass on?
  • How will artificial intelligence (AI) shape us and how will we shape AI?
  • How do we move with AI into a higher, expanded level of consciousness?

Come play with these big questions in a movement workshop where Melissa will share choreography + structured improvisations, providing opportunity for form and flow.

Open to the public, all interested in participating are welcome: teens (with guardian if a minor) and adults, no dance background necessary. Participate in feedback discussion following movement play.
