Performing Artist at HellaBlack Vol. 8: Genesis

My name is Sophia Perez, and I’m a singer-songwriter inspired by my Caribbean and Latin roots. I use music as a way to tell real stories from my life. This spans from moments of change, growth, joy, and figuring things out. I want my songs to feel honest and relatable, like something someone can say they’ve lived through too, while still being fun enough to dance to. That’s what music was for me growing up that made me fall in love with it in the first place.

Music has always been an outlet for me to process change, express myself, and grow into who I’m becoming. Each song feels like a new part of the process of life. I believe this is what Genesis is. Like how a Phoenix burns in its ashes and rises up stronger from those same ashes. Life’s process’s and seasons are about rebirth, transformation, and moving forward even when things are uncertain. That’s what I want my work to reflect. Different parts of the my life expressed through words and feeling while I keep becoming.

I love blending meaningful lyrics with rhythm and movement because dancing feels freeing and joyful to me. Through my work, I hope to create music that reflects where I come from, who I am right now, and who I will be and am becoming.
